Flap Your Wings (2000)

To the chagrin of Christian alt-rock fans everywhere, their longtime heroes, The Choir, pretty much called it a day in 1996, shortly after the release of its Dove Award-winning effort, Free Flying Soul.

That is until Flap Your Wings, recorded and produced independently by band leaders Steve Hindalong (drummer/primary lyricist) and Derri Daugherty (guitarist). It’s a decidedly delicate mix of the band’s best musical elements from its ’90s catalog, and although there’s not a whole lot new here musically, The Choir does throw in a few pleasant surprises. The plaintive, acoustic-based 'Mercy Lives Here,' for instance, is a rare showcase for Daugherty’s lyrics. Here the guitarist, while picking out a sad, folky melody, describes in living color the odd, temporal sights his eyes beheld in an Ohio bar—and the immediate knowledge that God’s spirit reaches, even places like that and those who dwell in them.

'Hey Gene,' a tribute to the late Gene Eugene of Adam Again and Lost Dogs fame, is a bouncy, energetic pop-rock gem that remembers The Choir’s fallen friend in fond, bright, hopeful language ('Hey Gene, give Jesus a kiss for us'). It’s also the most rock-oriented tune on the record—and the obvious centerpiece.

One of the most beautiful songs on Flap Your Wings is The Choir’s newest worship-oriented creation, 'Flowing Over Me,' augmented by the band’s classic, moody instrumentation beneath a restrained vocal duet by Daugherty and guest Christine Glass. Add to that a remake of 'Beautiful Scandalous Night'—a song that’s become a standard worship selection in many Gen-X churches—and you have on your hands a fine record with more than enough shining moments.
