Songs We Didn't Write (1998)

Price: $6.00

Price Currently Paid for this CD: $2.50

Ghoti Hook runs through a clutch of rock & roll favorites on the rowdy holdover record Songs We Didn't Write. Beginning, naturally, with 'I Love Rock & Roll,' the band punks and pops up tracks from New Order ('True Faith'), Violent Femmes ('Hey Nonny Nonny'), and tears into goofy fare like Michael W. Smith's 'Friends' with obvious glee. The latter's appearance is typical Ghoti Hook -- the band's Christian identity has always been slightly skewed from the Christian music genre's normal niceties. Songs We Didn't Write is more of an album for fans -- it's raggedly recorded, and its material -- barring a faithful, heroic take on the Pixies' 'Where Is My Mind' -- isn't strong enough to stand alone. But that's okay, since it's obvious that Ghoti Hook didn't really intend this album to be much more than it is -- a raucous, bawdy, 'because we can' record. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
