After leading Plankeye through four albums with Tooth & Nail, Scott Silletta left to form Fanmail, gathering Nick Garrisi from Quayle, Erik Tokle from Rich Young Ruler, and Chuck Cumming from Aunt Bettys. Scott co-produced The Latest Craze with help from Gene Eugene (Adam Again/Lost Dogs), and it was released early in 2000. Scott admitted to the Phantom Tollbooth that a contributing factor to leaving Plankeye and forming Fanmail was his disappointment that being labeled a 'Christian band' had limited the venues they could play, so Fanmail distanced itself from that stigma, touring with MxPx in bars and clubs. The Latest Craze was regarded by Phantom Tollbooth as 'a near perfect summer album,' and as 'upbeat pop-punk, with catchy melodies throughout.' There was still a lot of Plankeye's sound, but more of MxPx's, or a bit like a cross between the Wallflowers and recent Green Day. Adding to the fun is Gene Eugene playing keyboards in one of his final guest spots before his death. Songs include: 'Messed Up,' 'Rock and Roll Star,' 'Let Down,' 'True Brand New,' 'Turn Off That Radio,' 'Shirley Maclaine,' 'Superfan,' 'Lame,' 'Jordi,' 'Happy Birthday' and 'Wonderful Punches.'
