Figureheads on the Forefront... (2000)*

Blenderhead started out a Christian punk rock band from Seattle, fronted by Bill Power, who disbanded after their second album, Muchacho Vivo. Bill became an executive at Tooth & Nail Records. But he re-formed the band in 2000 to release their third and last album. More of an alternative rock album, but no less aggressive, it developed beyond the simple punk screaming of their debut. Several songs about romance gone sour border on misogyny, a common tendency among lovelorn band dudes with broken hearts. Figureheads on the Forefront of Pop Culture is a schizophrenic mash of emo/punk/pop that seems to randomly jump from genre to genre at points. 'I Gave Her My Heart, She Gave Me a Pen' starts off sounding like Third Harmonic Distortion before rocking a totally emo vibe about an ex-girlfriend. 'Theology and Algebra' is a punky minute-and-a-half, while 'Transatlantic Solo Flight' shows the more laid-back, emo/pop sensibilities of the record. 'Versatile Solutions for Modern Living' is a standout track on the album, winding through a course of dual-guitar indie goodness. Eventually, the guitars turn crunchy, and finally the track gently floats away on a lulling bed of sadly-melodic guitars. 'You Know Who You Are' rocks along with another tale of relationship hell. And they take quite the shot at 'scenesters' with the faux-punk/pop track 'Emerald City Indie Queen.' 'The Divine Minus Outside the Brackets' rags out on generic corporate America. Perhaps the best track is 'Vivaladel.' The lyrics create a crisp and believable image of an everyday girl that exists in an extraordinary way, while the music recalls The End of Julia and Hot Rod Circuit. Songs include: 'I Gave Her My Heart, She Gave Me A Pen,' 'Theology and Algebra,' 'Transatlantic Solo Flight,' 'Versatile Solutions For Modern Living,' 'You Know Who You Are,' 'Emerald City Indie Queen,' 'Monotone (Instrumental),' 'Fort Lewis Gun Club Youth Day,' 'The Divine Minus Outside the Brackets,' 'Kick the Map In the River,' 'Vivaladel' and 'Crown Hill Hardware'.
