This duo previously had chosen the band name Sorrow Of Seven, and recorded three demo EPs for Flying Tart Records, but became Aleixa in 1996. Aleixa's debut album, Honey Lake, was an industrial techno dance concoction featuring Snapper's angelic female vocals, which summoned tonal images of Sinnead O' Connor, the Cranberries, Missing Persons, or Yaz. But beyond these vocals were the Trent Reznor-style guitars and programmed synthesizers of audio engineer Kevin 131 (Deitiphobia, Argyle Park), or as 7ball magazine put it, 'Abba on acid.' Their sophomore release, Disfigured, released on Bullet Proof in 1999, demonstrates musical growth and further experimentation, including the use of horns and saxophone, and guest screaming by Sara Merritt of Pink Daffodils. Snapper's voice also appears modified, with inflections that reveal Eastern influences. The lyrical approach is pre-evangelistic, i.e. trying to knock down barriers that keep people from grasping the good news. Songs include: 'Familiar,' 'Purge,' 'Black + Blue,' 'Await,' 'Only Roses,' 'I'm So Scared,' 'Pacify Me,' 'Ultradramatic,' 'My Bed With Tears,' 'Disfigured,' 'The Reflex' and 'Await (remix)'.
